Visa information

for studying in Leeuwarden

Who needs a visa?

All foreign students (except residents of the EU/EER, Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, USA and Switzerland) who will stay in the Netherlands for more than three months, need a visa to enter the Netherlands. This entry visa is called a MVV (Machtiging voor Voorlopig Verblijf= Authorisation for Temporary Residence).

The procedure

1. The International Office of Stenden University of Applied Sciences will apply for your visa through an accelerated procedure as soon as:

  •  You have been accepted as a Stenden University student
  • CHN has received all payments as mentioned in the invoice(s) attached to your Letter of Acceptance
  • You have sent us all the necessary and requested visa and academic documents, as mentioned in your Letter of Acceptance

This procedure will -in general- take 4 weeks

2. The Dutch Immigration Service will send a notification to the Dutch embassy in your country after the preliminary approval of the visa application. The International Office of Stenden University will inform you by e-mail as soon as we have reached this stage.

3. You will then be invited by the Dutch embassy to pay them a visit in your home country. During this visit you will have an interview. After this interview you will be informed about the final decision concerning your visa application. If things went well you will receive your visa which allows you to enter the Netherlands once.

This procedure will -in general- take 2 weeks

4. After your arrival in the Netherlands you will have to apply for a residence permit. The International Office of Stenden University will guide you through this procedure. Your residence permit will always be valid until the start of the next academic year (September 1st) and has to renewed each year. Please go to our download area for more information on how to renew your Dutch residence permit.
