In the broad field of services, retailing is one
of the fastest growing industries. In the USA and the EU retail is the
second-largest industry both in number of establishments and number of
employees. In the last decade the expansion of the retail sector has
assumed an international and even global character.
Retailing is mostly seen
as a daily struggle for the consumers favour. One of the consequences of
this is a short-term managerial approach. Not only to operational
problems, but also to strategic challenges. In a rapidly changing world
where competition is fierce, focussing on short-term results and solutions
can be a danger. Companies are therefore looking for managers who are able
to take a pro-active approach to future developments and act with vision
and ambition.
